New House Corp. President Outlines Plans and Priorities for 2008-2009

As your new House Corporation President, I wanted to update you on a few of our key activities.

Recently the Bucknell Board of Trustees approved a new Campus Master Plan that will reduce the number of students living off campus to less than 200 by 2013.  To achieve this goal, the plan will require the construction of approximately 600 new student beds in the South Farm Village (behind TKE and Theta Chi).  Several fraternities may be relocated to accomplish this.  I will be participating in a conference call with other Greek alumni officers and the Dean’s office next week to discuss the University’s plans.  I will update you as I receive additional information.

Having your input on how we wish to define the Kappa residential experience will be critical as this plan materializes.  A key challenge we have is that we are not currently reaching the majority of alumni with this e-newsletter which will be the primary source for updates and feedback.  There are over 1,200 living alumni Brothers but we only have e-mail addresses for 300.  You can help expand the on-line network by simply forwarding this newsletter or by sending any e-mail addresses you have for alumni Brothers to content@affinityconnection.com.

In Addition to this critical initiative, the House Corporation is focused on the following priorities:

Kappa alumni relations

Alumni support will be the cornerstone of our ability to deliver on our House Corporation objectives.  Having active alumni demonstrates to the active Brothers that we care about them and the house.  It also demonstrates to the University that our connections to the campus remain strong and we are committed to being a value-added part of the Bucknell ecosystem.

To encourage your support, we will enhance the communication of relevant content to keep you informed about the house, active Brotherhood and University.  You will also see a renewed campaign to recognize Significant Sigs that exemplify the values of Sigma Chi in their personal and professional lives.  Going forward, we will be scheduling proper receptions at the house during Reunion and Homecoming weekends to encourage more Brothers to re-connect with the house.

University relations

We are working proactively with Chip Marrara, Dean of Greek Life, to insure that the active Brothers are living up to their obligations under the University’s Plan For Prominence.  I will be representing Kappa at the upcoming Greek Alumni Weekend on September 6th.  If any of you would like to get involved in this worthy effort, please plan to join me.

Active Brotherhood relations

We are engaging directly with the undergraduate Brothers to insure they understand their role in perpetuating Kappa’s positive legacy.  To further support the active Brotherhood, we will be encouraging alumni interaction with the undergraduate Brothers to share life and work experiences.  Brother Frank Arentowicz ’69 will make his annual visit to the house to present the History of Sigma Chi and the Kappa Chapter on September 18th at 8:00pm in the chapter room.  For those of you who wish to attend or schedule a separate visit please write me at steven.forbes@sap.com.

You will be pleased to know that our undergraduate Brothers are doing many of the “right things” to fulfill our mission to be the preeminent leadership fraternity at Bucknell.  Last week, 7 Brothers dedicated 4 days to attend the annual Balfour Leadership Training Workshop.  At which one of our distinguished Kappa alumni, Ken Langone ‘57, presented.  During the Workshop, our Kappa chapter was awarded the coveted Bash Award which recognizes significant improvement in chapter organization for the Fall 2007-Spring 2008 semester.  I want to recognize current Consul, Sean Driscoll and past Consul Mike Needham, for demonstrating the leadership necessary to earn this distinguished award.  Congratulations also go to Mike for his individual Balfour Leadership award for leadership within the Kappa chapter.

In closing, I want to thank Bob Cosgrove ’87 and Jason Fralick ’93 for agreeing to join the House Corporation as Secretary and Treasurer respectively.  I also wish to recognize Chris Hackley ’89, Bruce Walter ’68 and Tom Martin ’92 for renewing their commitment to the House Corporation and for their substantial contributions to the Kappa legacy.

On behalf of your Kappa House Corporation, thank you in advance for your ongoing support.

In Hoc,

Steve Forbes ‘87
President
